Asking
Questions and Fishing
One day Otis run into young
Bruce. Bruce was about 8 years old and Otis thought maybe it
would be a good idea to take Bruce with him up to South Arm and
do some fishing. Otis knew someone up there who had a little row
boat he could borrow.
The two headed for Richardson
Lake, loaded their gear into the boat and headed out on the lake
fishing. Both were being pretty quiet for about an hour when
Bruce began staring off toward the sky in a deep daydream.
After some time, Bruce came
back to reality and says to Otis, “Otis, how can this boat float
like it does?”
Well, Otis thought for a moment
and said, “Gee, Bruce, I dunno.”
Bruce looked at Otis and asked,
“Otis, how can fish breath under water? Why don’t they drown?”
Otis thought real hard and
answered, “Gee, Bruce, I dunno.”
Bruce continued to ponder real
hard and asked Otis again, “Otis, why is the sky blue?”
After some serious
consideration on the part of Otis, he replied, “Gee, Bruce, I
dunno.”
Bruce asked another question,
“Otis, how does the moon and stars stay up in the sky?”
Otis knew this was a real tough
question and he thought long and he thought hard and finally
looked straight into Bruce’s eyes and said, “Gee, Bruce, I
dunno.”
Bruce kinda smiling looked back
at Otis and asked, “Otis, do you mind I’m asking you all these
questions?”
Otis smiled back and said,
“Gee, Bruce, of course not. Afterall, you can’t learn anything
if you don’t ask questions.”
