Otis and Gabby were sitting on
two milk crates in front of Mill’s Market one day when a tourist
from the city - that would be Boston not Lewiston - pulled up in
front of the store. A finely dressed man got out the drivers
side and went inside the store. Shortly thereafter, a
well-dressed woman got out the passenger side and approached
Otis.
“What a beautiful necklace you
have. I couldn’t help but notice it when my husband and I pulled
up,” said the woman. “What is it made of?”
Otis, sat back a bit and up
straight while running both thumbs underneath his galluses and
spoke, “The strap is made from the dried stomach of black bear
and the white teeth come from 6 different bears each weighing in
excess of 700 lbs.”
“Oh, my!” exclaimed the lady.
“Very interesting. I suppose living around here, those bear
teeth mean to you what pearls do to people where I’m from.”
“Not really!” said Otis a bit
miffed at this flatlander. “Anybody can open up an oyster!”
